Late Night Friday and Saturday Jams at the Mutual Musicians Foundation

1am - 5am

Every Friday and Saturday night (OK, it is technically Saturday and Sunday mornings. But hey, we are jazz musicians, we haven’t slept yet so the next day hasn’t started.) the Foundation opens its doors to musicians and jazz enthusiasts alike. These sessions are more than just performances; they're a living tradition where seasoned artists and emerging talents come together, creating spontaneous and soulful music that echoes through the early morning hours. This tradition dates back to the 1930s, when musicians, after finishing their regular gigs, would gather to play into the early morning hours. The Foundation continues this legacy, providing a space where seasoned artists and emerging talents come together for spontaneous and soulful performances.

Whether you're a musician eager to join the jam or a jazz enthusiast looking to experience authentic Kansas City jazz, the Mutual Musicians Foundation offers an unforgettable late-night experience.

Mama Ray’s Blues & Jazz Jam every Saturday afternoon at BB’s Lawnside BBQ

2pm - 5pm

“The parking lot is full on a hot, sticky Saturday afternoon outside B.B.’s Lawnside BBQ, at 85th Street and Troost. Inside, middle-aged folks with tattoos drink buckets of PBR bottles. Families sit at long tables. Greasy napkins pile up in serving baskets. Onstage, a couple of shaggy-haired high school boys unplug their guitars and head back to their seats, where their parents offer smiles and encouragement. The third set of the blues jam is winding down.

“If you think you can, come on down,” roars keyboard player Allen Monroe. “We say it every week.” Diane “Mama” Ray, 67 years old, steps out in front of Monroe and the rest of her band, and in a sweet, husky voice, says, “These young guys! I tell you what.” Then up comes another young, aspiring blues musician who has signed up to play with Mama Ray and her band.” - Berry Anderson “The Pitch” Aug 2011
